Celebrate Mother’s Day with a Sweet Treat!

When my sons were young, we’d get up early on Mother’s Day to make French Toast. We’d put it on a tray with a flower from the garden and bring it to my wife in bed. Then we’d all pile into bed and eat breakfast together. Eating in the bed was always fraught with problems - crumbs would land everywhere, and syrup or juice would inevitably spill, but that’s what made it fun. Now that the kids are grown, my wife kinda misses those days. We still celebrate together, but we don’t pile into the bed to eat anymore. Maybe I should tell the kids to splatter some syrup on her for old time’s sake?

To me, Mother’s Day is about celebrating the mothers in your life and celebrating always means gathering together and eating some good food! Below are a couple recipes from the RavenHook family for making Mom a special treat:

A twist on Strawberry Shortcake

Take a RavenHook scone (lemon ginger is my vote, but sour cherry would work well too!), lightly toast or warm in the oven, and cut in half.

Place the bottom half of each scone on a plate then layer with whipped cream and sliced strawberries from the farmers market. Macerate strawberries in sugar to really make them pop!

Cover with top half of scone, a couple more berries, a dollop of whipped cream, and a fresh mint sprig!

French Toast

Ingredients:

  • 2 fresh eggs whisked until frothy

  • 1 cup milk or half and half

  • 2 tablespoons of brown sugar

  • 2 tsp real vanilla extract

  • ½ tsp cinnamon

  • ¼ tsp nutmeg

  • Pinch of salt

  • RavenHook Challah or Raisin Pecan Bread

Here is an easy recipe we use in our house:

Preheat the frying pan or griddle. Whisk together all ingredients in a shallow bowl. Dip Challah (or Raisin Pecan) slices into the liquid for about 5 seconds on a side. Fry in the pan or griddle until golden brown on the outside. Serve warm using desired toppings.

Toppings may include maple syrup, jam, butter, honey, fresh berries, powdered sugar, or whipped cream

Or you could bring Mom one of our small-batch jams and pair it with her favorite bread or a few scones. We have lots of jam flavors to choose from: strawberry rhubarb, sour cherry, wild blueberry lemon, strawberry lime, and traffic jam “a collision of flavors”
